The hip-hop community recently recieved sad news regarding the Atlanta rapper Young Scooter. Known formally as Kenneth Edward Bailey, he was a significant voice in Southern hip-hop, associated with labels like Future's Freebandz and Gucci Mane's 1017 Records. His life and career, rooted in the streets of Atlanta, offer a story of talent, struggle, and ultimately, tragedy.
Born March 28, 1986, Bailey moved to Atlanta's Kirkwood Community ("Lil Mexico") at age nine. This environment, along with a pivotal 2008 drug trafficking charge, shaped his path towards music. Notably, he was a childhood friend of the superstar Future, a connection that proved important later in his career.
While early mixtapes didn't make big waves, his 2013 release, Street Lottery, became a major breakthrough. It recieved praise from outlets like SPIN and XXL, and the single "Colombia" became a huge street anthem, even getting an official remix with Rick Ross, Birdman, and Gucci Mane. Young Scooter described his style as "count music," focusing heavily on money, and was known for his freestyle ability, often rapping without written lyrics. His influences included Jay-Z and 50 Cent.
Throughout his career, he collaborated with many top artists like Young Thug, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne. His feature on Future and Juice WRLD's 2018 track "Jet Lag" earned him his only Billboard Hot 100 spot.
Life wasn't without its challenges, including a notable 2013 arrest for probation violation, during which he reportedly shared a jail cell with Gucci Mane for a time.
Tragically, Young Scooter passed away on his 39th birthday, March 28, 2025. Reports indicate he sustained fatal injuries while trying to flee police who were responding to a call in southeast Atlanta. Authorities clarified that no officers discharged weapons and the injury was self-inflicted during the escape attempt. Initial confusion and speculation arose, but the official account points to a tragic accident during flight.
The news prompted an outpouring of grief from fellow artists like Quavo and Waka Flocka Flame, and fans across social media. Young Scooter leaves behind a legacy as a key figure in trap music, respected for his authentic portrayal of street life and his contributions to the Atlanta sound. His final mixtapes included Streetz Krazy (2023), Trap's Last Hope (2024), and Fast Lane Juugin (2025).
